Membership of an FPA can cost as little as a few hundred rand a year, depending on the size of your land.
The fee is well worth it, for a host of reasons. FPA membership helps you to fulfil your legal responsibilities and can help to avert claims that may arise should a fire start on your property and spread to your neighbour’s property (more about this in the last story of this newsletter).
Membership also helps you to manage the risk of wildfire through the many services that FPAs offer their members. These include providing subsidised training in firefighting on an ad-hoc basis; providing trained and equipped firefighting teams for creating firebreaks and other fuel-load reduction activities; removing invasive alien vegetation and fighting fires at a reduced cost, and providing basic equipment, such as fire-beaters, at subsidised prices.
